Rogers welcomes announcement of medical audit
NDP Health and Community Services Critic Gerry Rogers (MHA, St. John’s Centre) responded to Government’s announcement that a long awaited medical audit in Labrador West will be conducted by Morneau Shepell.
Several mine workers and their families have been affected by silicosis, a lung disease caused by exposure to silica dust. The formal request for the dust study was submitted over two years ago. Workers in Labrador West have been upset with the slow progress since then.
“I’ve been watching this closely and pressing government to honour their commitment to the mine workers,” said Rogers. “While it’s disappointing it took government so long to live up to their responsibility, I’m very happy for the workers and their families who will finally get the attention to their health that they deserve.”
“I will continue to monitor this situation to confirm that miners and their families are kept informed of the progress, and I will advocate on their behalf to ensure that they have access to the results and the report itself when it is complete,” said Rogers. “This long awaited study is overdue but of course, I do welcome it and I’m glad to see progress on this very important issue.”
