I am delighted today to congratulate Sarah Lewis, a Grade 11 Student at St. Bonaventure’s College, who was recently awarded the Lester B. Pearson scholarship to attend the prestigious Pearson College in Victoria, BC.
Last weekend Government House was “reclaimed” by 27 First Peoples, Indigenous artists from around the province. “Reclamation” curated by Mi’kmaq artist Jerry Evans as part of Eastern Edge’s 15-day ‘IDENTIFY’ – a celebration of indigenous arts and culture, the exhibit was so well attended that the organized tours had to be abandoned so the community could all squeeze in!
Last Wednesday night over 100 volunteers met at the Boys and Girls Club in St. John’s Centre to do the second Point In Time Count organized by End Homelessness St. John’s. From 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. the volunteers spread out across the city counting our city’s homeless population.
Thank you Mr. Speaker. I stand on March 28, what would have been the 74th birthday of Michael John Jones – father, grandfather, brother, uncle, visionary filmmaker, inspirer, and mentor especially of young people – had Mike lived two more weeks.
The Salvation Army has reached a significant milestone and broke ground for construction of their new Centre of Hope, on Springdale Street in St. John’s Centre. The Centre will provide 20 affordable, supported housing units, a health clinic, food bank, mental health services and drug addiction programs for some of the most marginalized members of society.
When we all heard the news that Jenny Wright and her daughter Shelby had survived a harrowing collision on the Southern Shore highway, there was an enormous outpouring of concern and support. Jenny’s commitment to the feminist movement and to the innovative work by her team at the St. John’s Status of Women Council’s Women’s Centre is legendary.
I am delighted to congratulate Dr. Falah B. Maroun for being invested into the Order of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Dr. Maroun came to NL to do a three-week locum in 1967 and has been in the province ever since. Like many Lebanese before him, including my own grandparents, he chose to stay and make this province his new home.
