16 years ago, three passionate animal lovers founded Heavenly Creatures, the province’s first no-kill, foster-based animal rescue organization. Jessica Rendell, Elaine Johnson and Thomas Ozon had a dream that together they could build an organization dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and finding homes for unwanted and abandoned animals in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Choices for Youth recently received a $25,000 Orange Door Award grant to help prevent and end youth homelessness in Canada. The grant comes from the Home Depot Canada Foundation.

On June 26, a devastating fire destroyed eight homes in the Froude Avenue community, severely damaging an additional 14 homes. It was a night of incredible loss. Families with children, seniors, people with physical disabilities lost everything they owned, escaping with simply the clothes on their backs. Family pets, irreplaceable family heirlooms, photos were gone.

Mr. Speaker today I acknowledge the incredible work of a number of organizations and activists in St. John's Centre who came together to create a new program called Blue Door.

I am pleased to rise today to recognize Sister Corona Wyse, a constituent who turned one hundred years old on July 15, 2017.

Sister Corona was born in 1917 in Placentia and was a teacher from 1936 to 1960. She taught in Grand Falls-Windsor and Corner Brook, and served as director of religious education with the St. John's and Stephenville Roman Catholic School Boards.

Here is one of the things I love most about this festive season. In our hemisphere, December marks the darkest time of the year. The days are shorter and the cold weather is settling in.

But the celebrations and the decorations are all about peace, light and joy.
Christmas brings light just when we need it most.

It’s December and we’re all so busy.. We're stretched for time or money, we're running trying to get everything done….. the right gift for everyone, finding a tree, decorating, cooking, running from concert to concert. It can all feel so overwhelming!

Thank you, Mr. Speaker.

Mr. Speaker, this year the students at Rennie’s River Elementary School have something new to enjoy, and they have it because of their own hard work.

Thank you very much, Mr. Speaker,

I am fortunate to represent a colourful and diverse district with a piece of history on practically every street corner.
