It’s a question the Advanced Education and Skills Minister couldn’t answer, but NDP House Leader Lorraine Michael (MHA, St. John’s East-Quidi Vidi) finally got a response today during the finance estimates.

In this year’s budget speech, government admitted that the drastic measures it contains will be a big part of the province’s projected economic slowdown over the next few years.

Today in the House of Assembly, St. John’s Centre NDP MHA Gerry Rogers went looking for answers on whether government had any ideas at all on creating jobs in the province.

St. John’s Centre MHA Gerry Rogers says government may have heard from hundreds of people in preparing the disastrous Budget 2016 but she doubts how much they were listening. With thousands now protesting the budget, she says, government must be willing to listen and make changes.

St. John’s Centre NDP MHA Gerry Rogers hosted a wildly successful town hall last night, and brought some of the most pressing concerns raised there to the House of Assembly today. Rogers says seniors, in particular, are deeply concerned about coping with the punitive austerity measures in Budget 2016.

St. John’s Centre MHA Gerry Rogers says a town hall she is hosting tomorrow night (Wednesday, May 4) will truly engage people in discussion on the 2016 provincial budget and may even come up with some suggestions for government.

“We'll look at a number of issues, how they are affected by the budget, and explore what we can do as a community,” said Rogers.

Residents of the province are already facing an increase in the price of necessities such as food, says NDP House Leader Lorraine Michael (MHA, St. John’s East-Quidi VIdi), and if a Federal Court action launched by Oceanex is successful, prices will increase even more.

Earlier today, the Provincial Information and Libraries Resources Board announced that, because of budget cutbacks, it is forced to take the drastic step of closing 54 provincial libraries in the next two years. Up to 15 per cent of the province’s population could find themselves more than 30 minutes drive from the nearest library – in some cases, several hours away.

NDP House Leader Lorraine Michael (MHA, St. John’s East-Quidi Vidi) sees more questions than answers in the fall-out from government’s broadside at a Crown Corporation in the budget speech, which she feels sparked the resignation of Nalcor’s CEO Ed Martin and the entire Board.

In her budget speech, Newfoundland and Labrador’s finance minister spelled out the harm the budget will cause the province’s economy. Today, in the House of Assembly, the NDP caucus demanded answers from government.

The Liberals seem to have entirely reversed their stand on almost everything that was in their election platform last fall. St. John’s Centre NDP MHA Gerry Rogers cut through some of the new jargon today in Question Period in the provincial House of Assembly.
