NL NDP Fisheries and Aquaculture Critic Christopher Mitchelmore (MHA, The Straits – White Bay North) and Labour Critic Dale Kirby (MHA, St. John’s North) reacted with dismay to government’s move to freeze funding for the FFAW.


NDP MHA Dale Kirby (St. John’s North) attended an open house at a club for people with disabilities, and was appalled at what he heard.

The Longside Club, on Shaw Street in St. John’s, has operated for 25 years, serving people with disabilities in the capital city area. Between 60 and 80 people regularly participate in programs at the club.

NDP Housing Critic Gerry Rogers (MHA, St. John’s Centre) says government must deal with the provincial housing crisis – and the first step would be to find out exactly how big the problem is.


Members of the NDP Caucus will attend the 8th annual CBC and Newfoundland and Labrador Housing and Homelessness Network pancake breakfast events at the Battery Hotel and Smitty’s Restaurant (the Courtyard Marriott, Duckworth Street) in St. John’s tomorrow.


NDP Consumer Affairs Critic George Murphy (MHA, St. John’s East) is concerned about the latest inflation numbers from Statistics Canada, and is linking those numbers to Marine Atlantic rate increases. According to Statistics Canada, consumer prices in January were up in this province by 2.5% compared to January last year.


NDP MHA Dale Kirby (St. John’s North) is in Corner Brook today, meeting with Corner Brook Pulp and Paper workers. Kirby will also be meeting with students at the local college and university campuses.


NDP Leader Lorraine Michael (MHA Signal Hill-Quidi Vidi) says the 30th anniversary of the Ocean Ranger tragedy on February 15 would be the ideal time for government to seriously pressure Ottawa to create an independent offshore safety authority.
