Today in the House of Assembly, Gerry Rogers (MHA, St. John’s Centre) asked the government about its progress on two long-standing issues.

Human rights advocates have been requesting for years that gender identity be included in the province’s Human Rights Code, but Rogers was told at a budget estimates meeting that this hasn’t been done because gender identity is “confusing.”

NDP Education critic Dale Kirby (MHA, St. John’s North) had some pointed questions for the Minister of Education in the House of Assembly today. The first concerned his constituents in Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s.

Beachy Cove Elementary in that town will lose its cafeteria and some use of its gymnasium this September to deal with a shortage of classroom space.

St. John’s East MHA George Murphy had questions about ambulances in the House of Assembly today.

The 2010 Auditor General’s report outlined several problems in enforcing ambulance regulations. At that time the Department of Health and Community Services said it would upgrade the standards manual and the policies and procedures manual to address the problems.

Planned Parenthood

Mr. Speaker,

I rise today to salute an organization which does incredibly important work in shattering stereotypes.

MR. SPEAKER: The hon. the Member for The Straits – White Bay North.

MR. MITCHELMORE: Thank you, Mr. Speaker.

MR. SPEAKER: The hon. the Member for St. John’s North.

MR. KIRBY: Mr. Speaker, not surprisingly, the word green does not appear anywhere in government’s Outlook: 2020 labour market report. Any forward looking government would have a plan to prepare for a green economy workforce.

MR. SPEAKER: The hon. the Member for St. John’s East.

MR. MURPHY: Thank you, Mr. Speaker.

It is a great segue, talking about green energy and green jobs, Mr. Speaker. The tires that have accumulated in this Province are an excellent opportunity to create employment in areas that are plagued with unemployment.

MR. SPEAKER: The hon. the Leader of the Third Party.

MS MICHAEL: Thank you very much, Mr. Speaker.
