Emergency Medical Responders still waiting for report

NDP Health and Community Services Critic Gerry Rogers (MHA, St. John’s Centre) is calling for government to release the findings of the review of the Provincial Ambulance Program.

“In the Estimates Committee in April the Health Minister said she would have the consultant’s report within a week,” said Rogers. “Two weeks later she told the House she still didn’t have the report but it was coming soon. When will we see this report?”

This week the Minister proclaimed May 26-31, 2013 as Emergency Medical Services Week in this province.

“Signing the national EMS Week Proclamation is all well and good,” said Rogers. “However, many EMS workers in this province are underpaid and overworked—often on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This is creating unsafe working conditions and affecting service to the people of the province. EMS workers are contacting me telling me about how unsustainable the situation is.

“It’s not unusual for this government to make vague promises,” said Rogers, “but actions speak louder than words. It’s time for action from this government. Our EMS workers are waiting.”
