Canspell Spelling Bee
March 08, 2012
On March third of this year, the College of the North Atlantic hosted the sixth Newfoundland and Labrador regional finals of CanSpell, the national spelling bee. CanSpell locally is sponsored by The Telegram newspaper as part of its ongoing commitment to literacy skills.
The 2012 CanSpell competition saw 1800 students participating around the province, and a record 55 young scholars from Grades Four through Eight, competed for the right to represent the province at the national final in Toronto. Every participant deserves our congratulations. I would add that their teachers and parents deserve our thanks for supporting the students.
If the House will indulge me, I would like to single out the two students who represented a school in my own district for special recognition.
Grade Four student Aaron Sarkar and Grade Six student Brandon Tilley represented St. Andrews Elementary in the regional spelling bee. St. Andrews has a long history of involvement with the Canspell Bee, and the school is to be applauded for its commitment to literacy.
Mr. Speaker, I ask all honourable members to join me in congratulating the participants of the 2012 edition of the Canspell spelling bee.
Thank you, Mr. Speaker.
