Michael to people: “Our House is Open”

Lorraine Michael and the NDP caucus are challenging the democratic deficit in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Question of the Day campaign, launching today, will operate on the same daily schedule as a functioning House of Assembly would, explained Michael.

“During the next three weeks, when we would normally be allowed to publicly debate and question in the House of Assembly, the New Democrats will pose questions of government on the days when the House should be open,” Michael said.

Mondays through Thursdays, from today (Nov. 21) until Dec. 9, the NDP caucus will ask a question of government, similar to the several they would pose daily if they were sitting opposite the Cabinet Ministers in the House of Assembly.

“We are here. We are working. We are asking questions,” Michael said. “I hope the Conservatives will have the courtesy to answer those questions for the people of Newfoundland and Labrador.”

The first question of the campaign follows:

Question for Nov. 21, 2011
Lorraine Michael, MHA, Signal Hill-Quidi Vidi

Mr. Speaker, my question is for the Premier.
In the past few months the province’s healthcare sector has seen more far-reaching and systemic problems.
We have seen drastic cuts to the Licensed Practical Nursing profession, more alarming errors from Central Health’s troubled radiology department, and the revelation that parents of a seriously ill unborn infant that will need surgery in another province days after birth will not get funding to accompany their child.
Mr. Speaker, public confidence in our province’s healthcare system continues to erode.
Mr. Speaker, I ask the Premier, when will her government recognize that our healthcare system is in crisis and finally do as the NDP has been demanding for years – conduct a full review of healthcare in this province instead of the piecemeal, fire-fighting approach undertaken in the past?
