NDP Leader wants more information from Atlantic Lottery

NDP Leader Lorraine Michael (MHA Signal Hill – Quidi Vidi) asked the Atlantic Lottery Corporation to release more information on what ethical guidelines it plans to follow in pursuing business opportunities in other countries.

“Problem gambling is a serious issue in our province,” said Michael. “New Democrats have fought for the elimination of highly addictive gambling practices such as video lottery gambling, and have asked the province to appoint someone who can offer advice on the addiction, health and safety aspects of gambling to the board of Atlantic Lottery Corporation.

“We have to deal with the devastating problems associated with gambling in our own society,” said Michael. “Do we really want to profit from those same problems on the backs of people in other countries?”

Michael notes the lottery corporation was originally created so people in Atlantic Canada could enjoy gambling in a responsible, regulated environment with the proceeds being distributed to the four provinces to support public programs.

“Would the corporation be regulated to Canadian standards in other countries? I want to be assured that our lottery corporation would not put profits ahead of people, whether those people are here or in another country,” Michael said.
