Rogers questions timing of Down Payment Assistance Program

NL NDP Housing Critic Gerry Rogers (MHA St. John’s Centre) said she doesn’t know whether to celebrate or denounce the government for rolling out their Down Payment Assistance Program this afternoon.

“I am appalled by how long it took for this administration to enact this policy – they promised it in the 2011 Blue Book!” said Rogers. “I can’t tell you how many times I stood up in the House of Assembly and asked, ‘where is it?’”

Rogers noted that, in the four years since government first announced this plan, housing prices have increased.

“It’s hard today to find a house for $250,000 in St. John’s,” Rogers noted. “How many people could have been helped if this were put into play three or four years ago?” she asked.

“If government really had the best interests of young working families in mind, they would have done this years ago,” Rogers said.

“Government should be embarrassed that, after years of promises, this is coming out just before an election,” said Rogers. “The people of Newfoundland and Labrador can see through this.”

“Young families are being pinched from every side – childcare, student loans, and mortgages,” Rogers said. “To really give families a hand up, we need programs that work in tandem to address their needs. Affordable childcare has to be part of that.”
