Rogers raises questions about psychiatric services at Her Majesty’s Penitentiary

Today in the House of Assembly NDP Justice Critic Gerry Rogers (MHA, St. John’s Centre) pressed the government to release a report from the Citizens’ Representative.

Rogers stated that in March 2011, the Office of the Citizens' Representative released a report on the psychiatric services at HMP.

The government then committed to an independent peer review and on May 1st in Estimates Committee, the Minister promised he would table the report of that review in a 'timely fashion'.

“Mr. Speaker we know the review is done, I ask the Minister of Justice, will he release this report before this session of the House closes?” asked Rogers in the House.

Rogers also asked government for an explanation on why they are appealing a decision by Judge Diamond.

“I ask the Minister of Justice why is this government appealing this order and wanting to stop inmates with mental health issues from seeing their own medical professionals?” asked Rogers.
