NDP Leader Gerry Rogers is bringing greetings from the NDP Caucus during the annual Pride Week in St. John’s.

 

The NDP Leader is calling on government to address the urgent situation in our province’s correctional facilities. There have been three inmate deaths in correctional facilities, two at the Clarenville Correctional Centre for Women and one at Her Majesty's Penitentiary, in the last three months, and four in the past year.

 

The NDP Leader is echoing criticisms by the province’s Consumer Advocate Dennis Browne regarding Newfoundland Power’s request to increase its rates once again, this time by 1.2 per cent.

The NDP Caucus is concerned that government is ignoring the expertise of the Privacy Commissioner and is calling on government to address the Commissioner’s serious concerns about transparency and accountability in a new piece of legislation.

 

The NDP Caucus is calling for the implementation of urgent changes to mental health services in our correctional facilities, including increased access to counselling services.

 

The NDP Caucus is concerned about the elimination of salaried physician positions and the fact that 50,000 people in Newfoundland and Labrador don’t have access to a family doctor. Leader Gerry Rogers (MHA, St. John’s Centre) says we understand that some salaried physician positions will be eliminated around the province this year.

 

Education and Early Childhood Development Critic Lorraine Michael is concerned about an amendment to the Schools Act that may disadvantage the inclusion of children with disabilities.

 

The NDP Caucus is looking for support from other members of the House of Assembly for a Private Member’s Motion urging government to create an all-party Select Committee on Jobs to address the growing unemployment crisis in Newfoundland and Labrador.

 

Today in Question Period, Leader Gerry Rogers asked the Premier about the unusual lack of a Request for Proposals to supply cannabis in the province leading to the deal with Canopy Growth.

Rogers (MHA, St. John’s Centre) asked the Premier why exactly a RFP wasn’t issued for the supply of cannabis.
