Rogers looking forward to mental health committee
NDP St. John’s Centre MHA Gerry Rogers says she hopes the select committee of the House of Assembly that all parties approved last Wednesday will get to work sooner rather than later. She wrote to Health Minister Steve Kent this morning, and is encouraged that he has indicated he will be in touch next week to discuss it.
In a rare show of support in the House of Assembly, all three parties voted in favour of Rogers’ private member’s motion calling for the immediate establishment of a select committee to study mental health.
After Rogers held a standing-room-only town hall on mental health last June, she brought together more than 30 groups and organizations to eventually form the Community Coalition 4 Mental Health. That group circulated a petition, which Rogers presented in the House, calling for the select committee, and she presented the idea as a private member’s motion.
“It’s #BellLetsTalk day on Twitter, and boy am I ready to talk about mental health,” Rogers said today. “More importantly, though, I am ready to listen. From my town halls, and from my work as an MHA, I know there are many people who have important things to say about mental health.
“There are people who have been seriously challenged by the system, and others who have had terrific healing experiences. There are people and organizations with excellent suggestions for making the mental health system work. Our community offers a wealth of knowledge and experience to draw from.
“I am hopeful the committee will get off the ground soon, and I am completely committed to seeing that happens.”
