Lake Melville mercury contamination becomes House issue

Today in the House of Assembly NL NDP Leader Lorraine Michael (MHA, Signal Hill – Quidi Vidi) asked the premier what her government is doing to address the ongoing concerns of mercury contamination in Lake Melville.

Health Canada raised concerns about the existing mercury levels in the lake because of Upper Churchill power project during the environmental assessment process for Muskrat Falls, and the potential for more contamination with further development.

“Mr. Speaker, I ask the Premier what is her government doing to address the immediate and future concerns of this significant adverse effect on the residents of the Upper Lake Melville communities and Rigolet?” Michael asked during Question Period today.

The Joint Review Panel Report, which the provincial government has not yet responded to, recommended more work be completed in how mercury contamination levels are measured.
