Unelected school board must not close Holy Cross Junior High
St. John’s Centre MHA Gerry Rogers says appointed school trustees should not be allowed to close a junior high school in her district. Holy Cross Junior High is one of five schools in the province facing closure at next month’s school board meeting.
Rogers says the board, appointed by the previous government when it dissolved the four English-speaking school boards in the province in 2013 is unaccountable to the public and has no moral authority to close the schools. She quoted the current Minister of Education to make her case.
“On March 5, the Newfoundland and Labrador English School Board passed a notice of motion concerning closure of Holy Cross Junior High, one of the few remaining schools in the Centre city,” Rogers said in the House of Assembly today.
“The Minister of Education while in Opposition said the current Board is, quote ‘Appointed trustees, hand-picked trustees, it really removes accountability. They are accountable to those who appointed them as opposed to accountable to those people that elected them.’
“I ask the Minister will he honour his word and stop this process immediately until a duly elected Board of Trustees elected by the community is re-established?”
Rogers says she would ask the minister how he could allow an appointed board with no moral authority and accountability to the people of the community to make these crucial decisions. She adds he should do the right thing and call for the long overdue elections for School Board Trustees that will be answerable to the people of the community.
