Rogers looks again for answer to Holy Cross question
Today in the House of Assembly, St. John’s Centre MHA Gerry Rogers revisited questions which the Minister of Education would not answer when she asked them last week. Since 2011, four schools in St. John’s Centre have been closed, and Holy Cross Junior High on Rickett’s Road faces the same fate.
The last school board elections in the province were held in 2009; when the previous government combined the four existing school boards into one in 2013, it suspended elections scheduled for that year. Neither that government, nor the current one, called a school board election, although the Dwight Ball Liberal government says it plans to do so some time this year.
“The appointed English School Board passed a notice of motion concerning closure of five schools, including Holy Cross Junior High. I thank the members of the Board for their dedicated service,” Rogers said in the House of Assembly today.
“In Opposition the Minister of Education said the current Board is, quote, ‘appointed trustees, hand-picked trustees, it really removes accountability. They are accountable to those who appointed them as opposed to accountable to those people who elected them.’
“Mr. Speaker I ask the Minister again, will he honour his word and stop this process immediately until a Board of Trustees is duly elected by the community?”
Rogers says the minister should do the right thing and stop all proceedings of school closures until a duly elected Board of Trustees is in place.
