Michael blasts government on economic impact of budget

NDP Leader Lorraine Michael (MHA, Signal Hill-Quidi Vidi) says the 2013 provincial budget will have a devastating effect on the provincial economy. Today in the House of Assembly, Michael wanted to know how much analysis the province had done before deciding on the layoffs.

“Yesterday government delivered a devastating blow to people, their families and communities across this province - especially in rural communities,” Michael said in the House.

“I ask the Premier does she have an analysis done on what impact these cuts would have province’s economy?” On being told they did not, she asked, “Will the province get Dr. Locke to complete such an analysis?”

The impact of the layoffs will be felt particularly in rural regions of the job where alternate employment may not be as easily available. “These government jobs are good-paying, stable jobs that enhanced the communities where these people lived and worked,” Michael said. “These communities are losing the services those jobs provided and they are also being hit with higher fees.

“Has the premier analyzed what this will mean for rural communities?”
