Kirby questions government’s commitment to school councils
NDP Education Critic Dale Kirby (MHA, St. John’s North) had some pointed questions for the Minister of Education today.
“Last month the Minister of Education attended the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of School Councils AGM where he asked school councils to help his department to make our schools safe and positive learning environments,” Kirby said. He then pointed out that although government legislates the existence of school councils, it provides no direct funding to them, even for basic supplies like paper and photocopying.
“I ask the Minister,” Kirby said, “how does he expect school councils to carry out their statutory responsibilities and assist his Department, when they are not provided the resources they need to operate?”
Kirby added that this year’s provincial budget directs school districts to trim operating budgets, and that the Federation of School Councils hasn’t received an increase in its grant in10 years.
“I ask the Minister, how does he justify the lack of funding support for our school councils?” Kirby asked. “Why are school councils such a low priority for this government?”
