Atlantic Accord changes missing one vital piece
NDP Leader Lorraine Michael (MHA, Signal Hill-Quidi Vidi) says today’s announced changes to the Atlantic Accord completely overlook one vitally important measure she has been supporting for years.
“Upcoming amendments to the Atlantic Accord will bring much-needed improvements to occupational health and safety for offshore workers,” Michael said in the House of Assembly today. “This action is ignoring the real need ― the creation of an independent offshore safety authority.
“I ask the Premier why Wells’ recommendation for this independent authority has had no impact on her, in spite of the fact she keeps telling us she supported it?”
Michael noted the consultations for the amendments to the Atlantic Accord have been ongoing since before the Cougar Flight 491 tragedy, or the consequent Wells enquiry.
“I ask the Premier, why did she continue to tell us she was pushing for this agency when it is clear the Harper government was not going to consider setting up an independent agency?” she said.
