MHA questions government’s commitment to public libraries

NDP Education critic Dale Kirby (MHA, St. John’s North) asked in the House of Assembly today why government has once again denied funding for new public libraries.

“It is well established that public libraries are vital for literacy and for life-long learning,” Kirby said in the House today. “Towns like Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s have repeatedly sought assistance for public library resources, but this government continues to do nothing to help.”

Part of the town of Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s is in Kirby’s district, and he has been hearing from constituents who are disheartened at the continued lack of action from the government in response to their repeated requests for a provincial library in the town.

“I ask the Minister of Education,” Kirby asked in the House, “Why does he have no interest in improving literacy in Newfoundland and Labrador?”
