Rogers looking for Government’s plan to deal with Federal Bill C-10

Today in the House of Assembly NDP MHA Gerry Rogers (St. John’s Centre) asked the minister of justice two questions about Her Majesty’s Penitentiary (HMP) and the department’s plans for dealing with the fallout from Federal Bill C-10.

“The federal government has made it clear that they have no intention to fund the construction of a new prison to replace Her Majesty’s Penitentiary. What does the government plan to do to address this problem?” asked Rogers.

Her Majesty’s Penitentiary is notorious for poor conditions for inmates and workers, and is becoming increasingly overcrowded. Replacement of the aging facility has been discussed for decades.

Rogers also asked the minister about the Whitbourne Youth Detention Centre.

Rogers asked in the House: “Mr. Speaker, is the government intending to reassign the Whitbourne Youth Detention Centre for the purpose of dealing with the overflow from HMP?”

“Once again we see this government with no plan,” said Rogers. “If they do in fact have a plan they should share it with the House.”
