NDP looks for assurances from Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture
With amendments to the Aquaculture Act recently tabled in the House of Assembly, NDP Fisheries Critic Christopher Mitchelmore (MHA, The Straits – White Bay North) brought the issue to Question Period today.
Environment Canada has laid charges against Cooke Aqua executives, who now face millions of dollars in potential fines and possibly decades in prison for depositing the lethal pesticide cypermethrin into the environment.
“Mr. Speaker, given that Cooke Aqua has substantial holdings in this province, can the minister ensure this House these practices are not happening here?” asked Mitchelmore.
Mitchelmore also asked the minister why it has taken so long for his department to get around to enacting the new biosecurity measures contained within the amendments to the Aquaculture Act.
