Michael renews call for healthcare review
NDP Leader Lorraine Michael (MHA, Signal Hill-Quidi Vidi) questioned government today on how the quality of patient care at Eastern Health will be maintained in the face of the announcement today that 385 positions will be lost to attrition over the next two years.
“Eastern Health has three goals: no layoffs, no reductions in quality of care and no closures of facilities. Government has the responsibility to monitor how this will work out,” said Michael. “Mr. Speaker, how does the premier plan to prove to the public that their health care will not be compromised by these efficiency measures?”
Michael also renewed her call for an external review of the province’s healthcare system.
“I have stood and asked for this many times over the past five years,” she said in the House of Assembly. “To ensure the efficiencies that are being put in place by Eastern Health do not hurt workers or patient care – we need this review. The point of an external review of our whole healthcare system would be to get a comprehensive idea of how to proceed with this most vital government service."
