Skyrocketing rents cause hardship for seniors: Rogers
NDP Housing Critic Gerry Rogers (MHA, St. John’s Centre) brought the plight of seniors facing “skyrocketing” rents to the House of Assembly.
“I’m getting calls from seniors on low and moderate incomes who can’t afford the uncontrolled rent increases they’re getting,” Rogers said in the House. “The Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation says the majority of calls they get for rent supplements are from seniors who face two- to three-year wait lists.
“Seniors are having to make decisions about rent, heat or food.
The current Rent Supplement Program is not working for them.
“Mr. Speaker I ask the Premier what plan does she have to deal with this?”
Rogers also offered the government a model to use as a possible solution.
“Mr. Speaker, British Columbia has a solution. They have a Shelter Aid for Elderly Renters program. What’s this province going to do for our elderly renters?”
