Rogers applauds Ontario’s adoption of gender rights
NDP Justice Critic Gerry Rogers (MHA, St. John’s Centre) is renewing her call for the province to add gender identity and gender expression to our Human Rights Act.
Rogers stated that today in Ontario Bill 33, known as Toby’s Act, passed third reading with the support of people from all three parties represented in their legislature. This Act provides protections on the grounds of gender identity and gender expression.
“I’m very pleased to see Ontario join the Northwest Territories in updating their human rights legislation. Other jurisdictions are also in the process of taking this important step,” said Rogers. “The minister of justice simply has no logical excuse to steer clear from bringing in similar amendments here in Newfoundland and Labrador.
“It is time for our province to do this. They've deliberated enough. It is time for action! Why won’t the minister do the right thing? Why is he refusing to improve our Human Rights Act to ensure everyone in our society enjoys the same rights and protections?”
