NDP questions suspension of LPN program, post-secondary job losses

NDP Advanced Education and Skills critic Dale Kirby (MHA, St. John’s North) brought concerns about the future of a training program for licensed practical nurses to the House of Assembly today.

“Despite the need for licensed practical nurses in Newfoundland and Labrador, College of the North Atlantic has not announced a new intake of LPN students at the Bay St. George Campus in Stephenville,” Kirby told the House today.

“Can the minister of advanced education and skills confirm that the LPN program at the Bay St. George Campus has been suspended?”

Kirby also wanted to know the total number of job losses in post-secondary education from this year’s budget.

“Mr. Speaker, despite government’s assurances that there would be only a few job losses as a result of this year’s budget, job cuts at College of the North Atlantic and Memorial University are mounting,” he said.

“Can the minister advise the House of the number of positions to be lost at the college and the university this year?”
