Rogers reiterates call for Human Rights Act amendment

NDP MHA Gerry Rogers

NDP MHA Gerry Rogers (St. John’s Centre), speaking at the Pride Week flag raising ceremony in St. John’s today, renewed her call for the province to amend the Human Rights Act to include protection against discrimination based on gender identity and expression.

Rogers has written to justice minister Felix Collins asking him to take the necessary steps to amend the act to “specifically enshrine the basic human rights protection which [trans gender individuals] like all people, are entitled to.”

The MHA raised the issue three separate times in Question Period during the spring session of House of Assembly, and feels the justice minister did not give an adequate explanation as to why he has not yet amended the act.

“We saw two separate news releases from government today in support of Pride Week,” Rogers noted. “Yet when it comes to real action – basic human rights protection or making anti-bullying measures part of our Schools Act – the provincial government falls down on their duty to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador.”
