Hard work pays off: Michael “thrilled” for Virginia Park community
NDP Leader Lorraine Michael (MHA, Signal Hill-Quidi Vidi) says she is happy and relieved to hear that six years of work in her district have paid off.
“The parents and the school council never gave up on fighting for what they believed was the right thing for their children and the community,” said Michael. “I am honoured to have been part of their struggle.”
An independent external consultant has recommended that the existing site for Virginia Park Elementary is the best place for a new school to be built. For years, the parents and the school community have been saying exactly that, while the school board and Department of Education have looked at several sites ranging from the former Janeway Hospital to King William Estates.
“I am absolutely relieved to get this news today,” said Michael. “For the six years that I have been MHA for the area, I have been working with parents and teachers to get a resolution.
“I have been in frequent contact with the Department of Education, bringing forward the opinions of the school community. My most recent letter to the minister was sent just yesterday, as a matter of fact.”
Michael adds that Virginia Park Elementary has a unique role as both a community school and a centre for community activities.
