Statement on Small Business Week
Christopher Mitchelmore (MHA, The Straits-White Bay North), NDP Critic for Innovation, Business, and Rural Development, has issued the following statement on Small Business Week, which is being observed Oct. 20-26. Mitchelmore’s statement reflects his caucus’s ongoing commitment to the small business sector in Newfoundland and Labrador.
“I sincerely believe rural Newfoundland and Labrador’s future depends on successful small businesses.
“Small business owners create jobs, employ local people, support other ventures and their communities, as well as spending money in the local economy. When we buy from the corner store, co-operatives and independently-owned businesses, we are building a stronger region that maintains local wealth, expands new business opportunities and creates new employment.
“Can we produce more locally? Can we buy more locally? Absolutely! And it is vital that government create and maintain an environment that encourages and supports local enterprises.
“This year, the Grenfell Memorial Co-op celebrates 100 years of operations. I cannot think of a better example that reflects the ingenuity and strength of our entrepreneurs and our innovative business models in our province.
“During Small Business Week 2013, I offer every entrepreneur and every employee of a small business my thanks for your contributions to our communities and very best wishes for success in the future.”
