NDP still seeking straight answers from government on Quebec talks

NDP House Leader Lorraine Michael (MHA, St. John’s East-Quidi Vidi) wants clear answers from government about who has been talking to people in Quebec about Labrador power, what power projects are being talked about, and what government is hoping to achieve.

“It is clear from the Premier’s statements to the media that the government is at least contemplating having meetings with Quebec over Labrador hydro projects,” Michael said in the House of Assembly today.

“I ask the Premier, what are the government’s objectives in taking part in such discussions?”

One possibility, Michael says, is that talks are underway for Gull Island development. This was a directive from the Premier to the Minister in last December’s mandate letters.

“The Premier’s mandate letter to the Minister of Natural Resources instructs her to seek opportunities to develop the Gull Island Hydro Project,” said Michael.

“I ask the Minister, can she please inform the House of any meetings she or her officials have had with the federal government, Quebec or other provinces concerning Gull Island, and the nature of those meetings?”

Michael is also interested in knowing whether the premier is aware of any discussions the federal government is having with Quebec or Nova Scotia about hydroelectric projects in Labrador.
