Province should be embarrassed by early learning report
NDP Education Critic Dale Kirby (MHA, St. John’s North) today said he is seriously concerned about the findings of a national report which ranks Newfoundland and Labrador lowest in the country in its early childhood education programs.
“We have no more precious resource than our children,” Kirby said today. “This government continues to refuse to recognize the importance of early childhood learning despite a wealth of evidence.”
The Early Years Study 3, released yesterday, emphasized the long-term beneficial effects of solid early childcare programs, that everything a society does to maximize a child’s early learning experiences maximizes the potential for realized potential.
Newfoundland and Labrador scored zero on 17 of the 19 early childhood education indicators used in the report.
“This is a disgrace. We are failing our children,” Kirby said. “We can do better and we must do better. If we do not invest in our children now, we will pay dearly later.”
