Michael presses for answer on privatization risk
NDP Leader Lorraine Michael (MHA, Signal Hill-Quidi Vidi) says she did not get clear answers from the natural resources minister last week, so she asked again today about the possibility that the Muskrat Falls project could be privatized.
“Section 4.11 of the federal loan guarantee clearly notes there cannot be a change of control or sale of Nalcor, but not so the subsidiaries that will soon be created,” Michael said in the House today. “Section 4.11 is open to the possibility that Muskrat Falls can be privatized and sold.
“Mr. Speaker, I ask the Premier, can you guarantee that Muskrat Falls will not be privatized?”
Michael pointed out that section 4.11 clearly distinguishes between the sale of Nalcor and the sale of its subsidiaries, and added that a sale could happen after the people of this province have paid for Muskrat Falls.
“I ask the Premier, why did she agree to a contract that will allow Emera the chance to buy part or the whole of the Muskrat Falls project?” Michael said.
“Did Emera or did this government ask for Clause 4.11 to be written into the Loan Guarantee?”
