NDP Critic for Aging and Seniors Gerry Rogers (MHA, St. John’s Centre) says years of governments refusing to face the realities of changing demographics has resulted in crisis in seniors’ housing. The mother of one of Rogers’ constituents was discovered with a black eye while waiting on a transition ward at the Waterford Hospital for a nursing home space to open up.

Today in the House of Assembly. NDP Leader Lorraine Michael (MHA, Signal Hill-Quidi Vidi) continued her advocacy for improved senior care.

“Many seniors requiring residential care have difficulty advocating for themselves. Many of their families have difficulty advocating on their behalf,” Michael said in the House of Assembly today.

NDP Leader Lorraine Michael (MHA, Signal Hill-Quidi Vidi) wants the minister of Health and Community Services to reveal the waitlists for long-term care beds in the province. She also chided the minister for a remark yesterday that showed his non-understanding of people’s financial realities.

NDP Leader Lorraine Michael (MHA, Signal Hill-Quidi Vidi) says the needs for long-term care spaces are continue to grow while government does little or nothing to deal with the realities of an aging demographic.

“The opening of the new Hoyles-Escasoni long-term care facility will provide 67 extra long-term care beds,” Michael said in the House of Assembly today.

 

George Murphy (MHA, St. John’s East) wrote a letter to the Minister of Health and Community Services asking for a review of regulations concerning personal care homes.

The recommendation comes following Mr. Murphy’s visit to the Cambridge Estates personal care home during a blackout on Saturday, January 4.
