Child Youth and Family Services

NPD Child, Youth and Family Services Critic Gerry Rogers

NDP Child, Youth and Family Services critic Gerry Rogers (MHA, St. John’s Centre) says the speed at which the department plans to change the way the most vulnerable children are sheltered is a reflection of the lack of planning the department has done – and will inevitably hurt the people they are supposed to be protecting.

NDP critic for Child, Youth and Family Services Gerry Rogers (MHA, St. John’s Centre) continued her questioning about the department’s new model for housing some of the province’s most vulnerable youth.

NDP Child, Youth and Family Services critic Gerry Rogers (MHA, St. John’s Centre) wants government to take seriously the province’s housing crisis. In addition, she says, government must recognize that youth have particular housing needs that must be confronted and appropriately dealt with.

MR. SPEAKER: The hon. the Member for St. John’s Centre.

MS ROGERS: Mr. Speaker, we are facing the worst housing crisis in our Province’s history and the victims are growing. The sexual exploitation report that government tried to hide for years told us of young people having to sell their bodies for sex so they could have a place to sleep.

NDP Child, Youth and Family Services critic Gerry Rogers (MHA, St. John’s Centre) says it is “morally reprehensible” for government to continue dragging its heels while children at Natuashish are at extreme risk.

NDP Child, Youth and Family Services critic Dale Kirby (MHA, St. John’s North) says the department is not acting quickly enough to correct deficiencies that put children in the province at risk. Vacancies in front-line social work and support positions that impact the quality of service delivery contradict government’s stated commitment to a new and improved organizational structure.

MR. SPEAKER: The Member for St. John’s North.

MR. KIRBY:Mr. Speaker, as the Child and Youth Advocate pointed out earlier this year, deficiencies in documentation and communication standards in the Department of Child, Youth and Family Services put children at risk of neglect and abuse.

NDP Child, Youth & Family Services Critic Dale Kirby (MHA, St. John’s North) says government is not taking its responsibility to the province’s children seriously enough. He cites the three-year delay in acting on an Auditor General recommendation as proof.

NDP Education Critic Dale Kirby (MHA, St. John’s North) had questions in the House of Assembly today for the Minister of Child, Youth and Family Services regarding her announcement on Friday of a supplement increase for Level II Early Childhood Educators working as operators in child care centres.
