Housing

MR. SPEAKER: The hon. the Member for St. John’s Centre.

MS ROGERS:Thank you, Mr. Speaker.

Since 2011, this government has promised a home ownership assistance program to working families again and again and again, yet there is absolutely no money in this Budget for it. Are they going to wait and haul it out during the election year?

MR. SPEAKER: The hon. the Member for St. John's Centre.

SOME HON. MEMBERS: Hear, hear!

MS ROGERS: Mr. Speaker, the housing crisis in Happy Valley-Goose Bay and Labrador West is growing. It is as plain as the nose on your face: zero per cent vacancy rate and rents that are doubling and tripling.

NDP Housing Critic Gerry Rogers (MHA, St. John’s Centre) says a publicly-funded home care system is crucial to help seniors who want to stay in their own homes.

“Last Spring the Health Council of Canada reported that 93% of seniors want to stay in their own homes, yet an increasing number are not receiving the hours of home care they need,” Rogers said in the House of Assembly today.

NDP Housing Critic Gerry Rogers

NDP Housing Critic Gerry Rogers (MHA, St. John’s Centre) is not happy that when the provincial government thinks of housing, it thinks only of the social housing for which very few people qualify. Rogers says she is tired of hearing the repeated iterations of how much government has spent on reroofing existing social housing, and this government has to stop denying there’s a housing crisis.
