Human Rights

NDP Justice Critic Gerry Rogers

NDP Justice Critic Gerry Rogers (MHA, St. John’s Centre) says on December 10 we can celebrate what we have accomplished in the field of human rights – and then prepare to continue work on the areas we need to improve. "Our Human Rights legislation must continue to evolve," said Rogers.

St. John’s Centre MHA Gerry Rogers says it is long past time for government to fix legislation that threatens the dignity, human rights and safety of transgender people. Instead of doing the right thing and bringing our legislation in line with that of other provinces, says Rogers, government has chosen to spend money fighting a human rights challenge in court.

The NDP MHA for St. John’s Centre has now written to four cabinet ministers in just under a month, looking for a common-sense solution to a roadblock facing transgender people in this province. Gerry Rogers wrote the first letter on Feb.

NDP Justice Critic Gerry Rogers (MHA, St. John’s Centre) is again marking the approach of Pride Week in St. John’s with a call for the Dunderdale Government to amend the province’s Human Rights Act to include gender identity and gender expression as prohibitive grounds for discrimination.

This year, St. John’s Pride Week runs from July 15-21.

NDP Justice Critic Gerry Rogers (MHA, St. John’s Centre) says while the justice minister was revisiting cuts made in his department, he should also have looked at the devastating effect Budget 2013 had on the Human Rights Commission.

Today in the House of Assembly, she asked him to table the documents on which his decisions to cut the Family Violence Intervention Court and the Human Rights Commission was based.

MR. SPEAKER: The Member for St. John’s Centre.
