I am delighted today to congratulate former mayor, deputy mayor, and councillor Shannie Duff who was recognized earlier this year with the highest award granted by the City of St. John’s: the Freedom of the City.

Walking into St. Teresa’s Elementary School is an amazing experience! They are a true treasure in the middle of St. John’s Centre and they have much to celebrate.

I am delighted to recognize Lisa Browne, Chief Executive Officer of Stella’s Circle, whom Atlantic Business Magazine has recognized as one of the Top 50 CEOs for two years in a row.

 

Twelve years ago film producer Mary Sexton began her odyssey to bring Maudie to the big screen. And she did it! Not only did she get the story of artist Maude Lewis on screens around the world, Maudie won twenty international awards. Among them Best Motion Picture at the Canadian Screen Awards and three awards at the Irish Film and Television Academy Awards.

 

It is not always easy in a city to feel part of a community, but the Georgestown Neighbourhood Association, formed in 2000 and run by volunteers, has been able to achieve that for the residents living inside the boundaries of Military Road, Bonaventure Avenue, Empire Avenue, and Monkstown Road in St. John’s.

 

Mr. Speaker what an honour to celebrate Mr. Wayne Lucas here in the people’s House today. After 26 years serving as President of CUPE Newfoundland and Labrador, Wayne has retired.

 

I am delighted today to congratulate Sarah Lewis, a Grade 11 Student at St. Bonaventure’s College, who was recently awarded the Lester B. Pearson scholarship to attend the prestigious Pearson College in Victoria, BC.

 

Last weekend Government House was “reclaimed” by 27 First Peoples, Indigenous artists from around the province. “Reclamation” curated by Mi’kmaq artist Jerry Evans as part of Eastern Edge’s 15-day ‘IDENTIFY’ – a celebration of indigenous arts and culture, the exhibit was so well attended that the organized tours had to be abandoned so the community could all squeeze in!

 

Last Wednesday night over 100 volunteers met at the Boys and Girls Club in St. John’s Centre to do the second Point In Time Count organized by End Homelessness St. John’s. From 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. the volunteers spread out across the city counting our city’s homeless population.
