Offshore Safety

NDP Leader Lorraine Michael

NDP Leader Lorraine Michael (MHA, Signal Hill-Quidi Vidi) had questions in the House of Assembly today about government’s plans on a pair of pressing environmental challenges.

NDP Labour Critic Dale Kirby (MHA, St. John’s North) demanded today that government look at introducing a safer work rotation for offshore employees.

“We have studies showing that a huge majority of accidents and stress happen in the third week of the three-week rotation at sea,” Kirby noted. “In Norway and Great Britain, workers are at sea for just two weeks.

NDP Leader Lorraine Michael (MHA, Signal Hill-Quidi Vidi) has renewed her call for a truly independent offshore safety authority in the wake of the most recent report of a spill into the ocean off Newfoundland and Labrador.
