NDP Transportation and Works critic George Murphy (MHA, St. John’s East) says the Liberal call for a potentially very costly judicial inquiry is unnecessary, as there is already exists a way for the House of Assembly to look further into the matter – the Public Accounts Committee, which resumed public meetings in July 2013 after a stagnant period of several years.
NDP Leader Lorraine Michael (MHA, Signal Hill-Quidi Vidi) says government should release the numerous plans it has been citing for the past year so the people of the province have some idea what to expect in the coming months.
Christopher Mitchelmore, NDP MHA for The Straits-White Bay North, had a couple of suggestions for government today in the House of Assembly. Mitchelmore, who sits on the Public Accounts Committee, had a question about the make-up of that committee.
NDP Leader Lorraine Michael has renewed her call for an active Public Accounts Committee. The committee is supposed to oversee government spending, and to ensure compliance with the Auditor General’s report. The last Public Accounts Committee met just once privately in the past 15 months, and no PAC has held a public meeting for six years.
