Public Utilities board

It has been almost a year since the Liberal government was elected and, says NDP House Leader Lorraine Michael (MHA, St. John’s East-Quidi Vidi), the people of the province are still waiting for government to put some effective oversight in place for Nalcor, which is responsible for a large chunk of each year’s budget deficit.

NDP House Leader Lorraine Michael (MHA, St. John’s East-Quidi Vidi) says in light of the many concerns raised by today’s release of the Ernst Young interim report of the Muskrat Falls Project, government must immediately engage the province’s Public Utilities Board in overseeing the Muskrat Falls hydroelectric project.

NDP Consumer Affairs critic George Murphy (MHA, St. John’s East) says household budgets in the province are reaching the breaking point, and the latest multi-million dollar ask from Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro may be the final straw if the province’s Public Utilities Board grants the rate increase.

NDP MHA George Murphy (St. John’s East) says the news from Nalcor today on cost overruns on the Muskrat Falls hydroelectric project is very unsettling. He is particularly concerned about a projected 25 per cent increase in electricity rates.

NDP Leader Lorraine Michael (MHA, Signal Hill-Quidi Vidi) says the good work done by the province’s Public Utility Board investigating the January 2014 blackouts is a clear demonstration that the PUB should also be given oversight of Muskrat Falls.

NDP Leader Lorraine Michael (MHA, Signal Hill-Quidi Vidi) says the Liberty Consulting interim report released yesterday by the province’s Public Utilities Board not only paints a picture of neglect on Nalcor’s part, but also clearly demonstrates the importance of the PUB to the electrical system.

NDP Leader Lorraine Michael (MHA, Signal Hill-Quidi Vidi) has made a written presentation to the Public Utilities Board pre-conference hearing into the investigation of extensive power outages in the province earlier this year.

NDP Leader Lorraine Michael (MHA, Signal Hill – Quidi Vidi) says the Premier is once again attempting to diminish and undermine the role of the PUB while avoiding true accountability following the recent energy crisis.

Michael was reacting to the announcement by Government that it will initiate an independent review of the province’s electricity system.

NDP Leader Lorraine Michael (MHA, Signal Hill – Quidi Vidi) has written the Chairperson and Chief Executive Officer of the PUB, Andy Wells, to ask for an inquiry into the widespread power outages that affected the island portion of the province from January 2 -6, 2014.
