NDP Innovation, Business and Rural Development Critic Christopher Mitchelmore (MHA, The Straits-White Bay North) had questions for the provincial government about support for regional economic development boards.

MR. SPEAKER: The hon. the Member for The Straits – White Bay North.

MR. MITCHELMORE: Thank you, Mr. Speaker.

I ask the Premier: When was she or officials from the related Department of Innovation, Business and Rural Development made aware of ACOA's cut to funding for the rural economic development boards in this Province?

MR. SPEAKER: The Leader of the Third Party.

MS MICHAEL: Thank you very much, Mr. Speaker.

The bottom is falling out of the economy of rural Newfoundland and Labrador. Cuts to EI and ACOA, cuts to federal jobs and programs, will devastate an already fragile rural economy.

MR. SPEAKER: The hon. the Leader of the Third Party.

MS MICHAEL:Thank you very much, Mr. Speaker.

Mr. Speaker, one of the reasons the Premier gave for not calling a public inquiry into the death of Burton Winters evaporated yesterday with the revelation the federal government will co-operate with a provincial public inquiry.
