School Buses

NDP Leader and Education Critic Lorraine Michael

NDP Leader Lorraine Michael (MHA, Signal Hill-Quidi Vidi) had questions today about a newspaper story in which school bus operators claim government officials had been stringing them along, recommending (and partially paying for) a lobbyist with Tory connections and selling tickets to a Tory fundraising dinners as a way of speaking with cabinet ministers.

It’s just the first day of school and already the Education Minister is getting a failing grade. NDP Education Critic Dale Kirby (MHA, St. John’s North) says if he had to fill out a report card for the minister, there would be a lot of “could make more effort” comments.

NDP Education critic Dale Kirby (MHA, St. John’s North) says the report on school transportation finally released today by the provincial education minister has some solid information, and he is calling on the minister to make much-needed changes to the province’s policy on school bus transportation before the upcoming winter.

NDP Education Critic Dale Kirby (MHA, St. John’s North) has written to the education minister, asking what happened to a review of school transportation commissioned by the provincial government last year.

“In November 2012, we saw the call for proposals for a consultant to do the review, and the next month we heard that Deloitte had been awarded the $75,000 contract,” Kirby said.

NDP Education Critic Dale Kirby (MHA, St. John’s North) says it is time for the education minister to take responsibility for cuts to schools and the province’s unreasonable school busing policy.

NDP Education Critic Dale Kirby (MHA, St. John’s North) is hoping there is more to government’s upcoming evaluation of school transportation policies than is included in last Friday’s news release from the education minister.

Dale Kirby (MHA, St. John’s North) today posed questions regarding the safety of the province’s children, asking whether the decades-old Department of Education regulations related to school buses should be amended to reflect a time of busier roads and longer distances.
