If government had acted years ago on requests from the East Coast Trail Association, the current controversy sparked by a private company’s mountain bike tours could have been avoided, says the NDP critic for Tourism, Culture and Recreation.

 

NDP Tourism, Culture and Recreation Critic Christopher Mitchelmore (MHA, The Straits-White Bay North) was pleased to hear about the search to fill vacant Art Gallery positions as well as the commitment to the curatorial independence of the Art Gallery of Newfoundland and Labrador.

 

NDP Tourism, Culture and Recreation Critic Christopher Mitchelmore (MHA, The Straits – White Bay North) has written a letter to Minister French about recent layoffs and resignations at the Art Gallery of Newfoundland and Labrador and at The Rooms.

 

The NDP MHA for The Straits-White Bay North says a bit of creative thinking could go a long way towards increasing employment and financial returns related to traditional industries.

Today in the House of Assembly, Christopher Mitchelmore pointed to the community forest model as one with potential for this province.

NDP Tourism, Culture and Recreation critic Christopher Mitchelmore (MHA, The Straits-White Bay North) says if government wants to promote tourism as a year-round industry for the province, it could start by looking at the potential snowmobiler market. Promoting trails in Labrador and on the Northern Peninsula, which traditionally have the longest seasons, would be a good start, he says.

Today in the House of Assembly NDP Tourism, Culture and Recreation Critic Gerry Rogers (MHA, St. John’s Centre) pressed the minister to take action on concerns facing operators in the tourism industry.

In light of the Federal government’s cuts to Parks Canada sites here in Newfoundland and Labrador, the minister said he will ‘refocus’ efforts within the department.
