NDP Workplace Health & Safety critic George Murphy

Last week the provincial government made much ado about investing in firefighting equipment in central Newfoundland. NDP MHA George Murphy (St. John’s East) says while this funding is important, he wonders where the support is for the firefighters themselves.

The NDP critic for the Workplace Health and Safety observed the April 28 National Day of Mourning by highlighting some of the ongoing provincial concerns about workplace health and safety. George Murphy (MHA, St. John’s East) says the stop work order at Muskrat Falls for safety reasons is a reminder that Labrador’s industrial sites need regular and frequent inspection to protect workers.

She is particularly appalled the cabinet minister who should be helping them conveyed his decision to the media rather than directly to the workers.

NDP Leader Lorraine Michael (MHA, Signal Hill-Quidi Vidi) is calling on the province to take action on a report presented to government more than six months ago. The release of the final report of the Baie Verte Asbestos Miners’ Registry came in April of this year.
