NDP Private Member’s Motion today calls for removal of Liberal Levy

NDP House Leader Lorraine Michael

Today in the House of Assembly, MHAs have the opportunity to vote for or against dropping the idea of an unfair levy on the province’s taxpayers. The Liberal Levy has sparked outrage throughout the province.

NDP House Leader Lorraine Michael (MHA, St. John’s East-Quidi Vidi) says the straightforward motion calls for the levy to be immediately eliminated and for an independent review of the province’s tax system to ensure future fairness.

“We deliberately put the word ‘immediately’ in today’s motion because the Liberals have tried to defend their levy by saying it is temporary,” said Michael.

“First of all, I have grave doubts about what ‘temporary’ may mean when the Liberals say it, and secondly the fact that this unfair tax is temporary does nothing to make it any less unfair.”

Michael and St. John’s Centre MHA Gerry Rogers continue to receive thousands of messages protesting the draconian measure. “I can only assume every MHA is getting similar messages from constituents,” Michael said.

“This afternoon in the House, they will have the chance to do what their constituents are asking them to do.”

Debate on the motion will proceed this afternoon in the House of Assembly. The House opens at 2 p.m. and closes at 5 p.m.
